Benefits of Runnings
Getting into running can benefit you in many ways both physical and mentally. Did you know that runners have a lower chance of osteoarthritis and needing a knee replacement? To get on your way to enjoying all the health benefits to running, here’s some quick tips from an osteopath to get you going.
  1. Start with the right shoes. One of the great things about getting into running is the low-cost barrier to getting started. By far the most important things you need is obviously shoes and it is worth your time and money to go into a store that does shoe fitting for runners.
  2. For complete beginners programs such as the Couch to 5k (available as an app) are excellent. Another great way to get started is joining in your local park runs, they are free and with 440 weekly runs in Australia, chances are there’s one close to you. There’s even one at Wilson Botanic Park Berwick opposite our clinic! www.parkrun.com.au
  3. Don’t exhaust yourself. If you finish a run a run and don’t feel like you can run another 10 to 20 minutes you have run too far and you increase your risk of injury. Most running injuries are due to overuse and your body needs time to adjust.
  4. Self-management is important. Heat on muscles can be helpful before a run and make sure to start slow. After a run, foam rollers are great for your quadriceps and calves and massage or spikey ball are great for releasing your glute or hip muscles.
